Bio

Patrick Souiljaert (Sue-Lee-Art) is the author of ‘Stairs For Breakfast’ and ‘Screw It, I’ll Take The Elevator’: a two-part autobiography by a man with Cerebral Palsy who doesn’t let anything stand in his way. He typed both books (200,000 words) with one finger in 15 months. Patrick is passionate about helping people overcome adversity and sharing how you can do anything you want in life.

One of the other things Patrick’s done over the last few years is become an Ascension meditation teacher. Living in the moment not only makes Patrick more contented, it also makes it easier for him to walk and talk. When the mind is relaxed the body relaxes. Patrick enjoys sharing his experience and helping people lead fulfilling lives.

People tend to regret the past and worry about the future. However the past cannot be changed and the future hasn’t happened. The only time that ever exists is RIGHT NOW! Enjoy the present moment.

His books have given him a platform as an inspirational speaker. Patrick says “I see my CP as a gift to help people on how to overcome adversity and do anything they want in life. “

Background information

Born in 1973 to Belgian father and English mother, Patrick has always refused to let his CP stop him from doing anything. It him led to have a career in computer programming with a household name in telecommunications and a parallel career in commercial radio, where he worked for three radio stations as a producer.

In 2011 Patrick made one of the biggest decisions in his life – to leave his secure, well-paid job as a software developer and go into property investment. At the time, he had no thought of writing a book or taking up meditation.

Patrick recounts “I learnt a lot about people and success because property is all about people. I created a blog about my property journey and, in a twelve month period, I viewed over fifty flats and bought two of them. I remember walking up and down stairs thinking there must be something easier I can do. A few people who were reading my blog updates suggested I should write a book!”

Book Descriptions (back cover text)

Stairs For Breakfast

This is the kind of book you should read when you think you have had a bad day. Patrick Souiljaert was deprived of oxygen for the first 4 minutes of his life and consequently denied the gift of easy movement and speech for the remainder of it.

It means that this brutally frank autobiography of someone with Cerebral Palsy who needs crutches for walking and eats stairs for breakfast when he falls, should be a depressing experience for the reader. It isn’t.

Patrick’s sense of humour and love of his fellow human beings shines through. His recall is amazing, his perception stunning. You, the reader, will share what it is like to have a profound physical disability, what it is like to have people patronise you when your IQ is several notches above those patronising you. You will laugh, you will cry and you will never feel sorry for yourself again.

Screw It, I’ll Take The Elevator

Read this book on days when the trains aren’t running, the boiler has broken down and the car won’t start. In Patrick’s world these are minor inconveniences. The sequel to ‘Stairs For Breakfast’ takes the reader on an odyssey of misadventure, misfortune and mischief that will make you laugh one minute and cry the next.

As someone who has Cerebral Palsy but who refuses to be defined by it, Patrick Souiljaert takes you inside a life that will have you doubting you could ever endure such trials. Yet amazingly, he emerges at the end of it in a better place than at the beginning.

His capacity for laughing at himself through the depths of adversity, his remarkable ability to recall the smallest detail, the simplest word and every crack on the path that he has walked, will take you on the journey alongside him. You will never forget it and you will be all the better for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do you pronounce your surname?
A: Sue-lee-art. It’s from the Flemish part of Belgium,

Q: Why did you write a book (or two)?
A: To inform, entertain and inspire people. I wanted to share my experiences (physical and emotional) and how I’ve overcome them. I also wanted to share my sense of humour and make people laugh.

Q: What drives you?
A: My Ford Focus on cruise control.

Q: How did you type, with one finger, over 200,000 words in 15 months?
A: (Success = 95% Mindset + 5% Action)

These are the key elements to how I did it:

a) In my experience, you can achieve anything, when you have enough desire, self-belief and persistence, Having this belief from a young age has helped me throughout my life.

b) I was extremely focussed.

c) When I told Glenn (my property mentor) I was going to write a book, he replied “At the end of every day email me how many words you’ve written that day.” So I did. Every day, when I finished writing, I sent Glenn an email and in the subject line put something like “Words today: 756”. It was such a good and simple way to help me stay motivated and accountable. On average I wrote 700 to 800 words every day. On one day I wrote over 1,300 words.

d) Before starting to write each chapter, I wrote a list of items I wanted to cover in the chapter. Then when I had covered an item, I crossed it off the list. It’s important to break goals down into manageable steps. It gave me a good sense of achievement.

e) When I had finished each chapter I emailed it to two friends. They gave me feedback. It helped me to keep going.

f) I wrote every day until I had covered everything that I wanted to say.

g) My intention was to write one book. However having written over 200,000 words, I made it into two books.

Interview questions

1. What made you decide to leave your secure job in software development?

The company I was working for outsourced the technical work and I was left doing clerical stuff. It didn’t stimulate me and I became interested in property investment.

2. How did you go about self-publishing your books?

  • I had a publishing assistant who helped me with Stairs For Breakfast. I learnt a lot from her. It made it simple, a couple of years later,  when I self-published Screw It, I’ll Take The Elevator.
  • Because my books are about people I got a libel lawyer to review my manuscripts to ensure my books weren’t libellous.
  • It’s important to find a good proof-reader (or two). Good proof-readers are often analytical people.
  • Fiverr.com is a good place to find someone who can design book covers.
  • It’s straightforward to self-publish books on Amazon / Kindle Direct Publishing.

3. How does Ascension meditation help you every day?

  • It makes me a more contented person – and it makes it easier for me to walk and to talk. When the mind relaxes the body relaxes.
  • Ascension helps you to be in the present moment.
  • In every given moment, you are either living in the present or in your mind.
  • Ascension is like mindfulness with a spiritual aspect.
  • It wasn’t my intension to become a meditation teacher. I first went to retreat in Spain in 2015 and kept going back every year for the next four years until I had completed the course. Becoming a teacher was part of the course.
  • The meditation retreat was on a steep Spanish mountain, which presented mobility challenges to overcome.

4. What do you love about public speaking?

  • It’s people who make the world go around.
  • I would like to make a difference in the world.
  • I see my CP as a gift to help and inspire people.
  • I also like making people laugh.

Visit my Speaking page to find out more about my talks and watch a recording of one of them.

5. What advice do you give to people?

  • Do the things you enjoy doing in life. You are good at the things you love to do.
  • Feel the fear and do it anyway – it will make you feel good afterwards.
  • Step outside of your comfort zone. Every day do something that scares you a little bit – because it helps to grow.
  • Try to help people. It will help you to feel good – and it’s reciprocity.
  • Create a product or service that adds value to people’s lives.
  • You cannot fail if you never give up.

I believe everyone has an inspirational story. Write a book or a blog.

  • If every week you wrote a 500 word blog post, after a year you would have enough material for a book.
  • If you are unable to type, make voice recordings of what you have to say and find someone to type it for you (on Fiverr.com).
